In 2003 we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Koonung Heights Methodist Basketball Club, now Koonung Heights Netball Club Inc.
The first meeting of that club was on March 20, 1963 at the Koonung Heights Methodist Church on the corner of Belmore and Winfield Roads, North Balwyn and those in attendance established a committee and drew up a constitution.
It was decided that 2 junior teams would be formed to play under the umbrella of the Methodist Girls' Basketball Association. The annual fees were set at 5 shillings per year (50 cents) and players were required to bring along sixpence (5 cents) per week- how times have changed! It was decided that the girls would wear a royal blue tunic tied with a white cord, over a white blouse with white socks and sandshoes - royal blue bloomers were compulsory and mothers could borrow the sewing pattern to make them at home!
To be eligible for team selection (teams were posted in "a selected place in the church"), all the girls had to attend Sunday School at least 3 times a month as well as a monthly church parade. Games were played at our home court at Koonung Heights Primary School (demolished in the late 80's) or at away venues anywhere from Pascoe Vale to Bayswater (and Mrs. Hearn was in charge of the first car roster).
